ランドマーク・ポスト、初のショート・ステイ報告！

ランドマーク・ポスト・クラブが正式に発足する前から、会員の短期留学が、どのようにすれば成功するかという実験を行っていました。その結果が、この度出ましたので、ご紹介致します。

この度、ランドマーク・ポスト・クラブの、初のアメリカ・ショート・ステイが終了。３か月の短期留学を終えた会員さんが、無事帰国。しばらく間をおいて、成績表も届きましたので、このステイの報告をさせて頂きます。行かれたのは女性会員30歳のＹさん。企業の正社員の彼女ですが、その会社の社長が私の友人でしたので、有給休暇などを頂き、アメリカへ行くことが出来ました。

彼女は元々、私の友人の社長の紹介で、ランドマーク・ポストの会員になったのですが、英語は全く駄目の部類に入っていました。でも仕事上、これから英語も出来て欲しいという社長の願いがあり、私に相談がありました。そこで、ランドマーク・ポストのトライアルとして、彼女を短期ステイに出すことにしたのです。本人はこの計画に驚いていました！（笑）昨年から約４か月、彼女はアメリカの私の友人と、Eメール交換で英語の勉強を行い、その友人の家に向かったのです。

「ワクワクしました！メール交換も最初の方は、何を書こうか迷いながら、自己紹介からスタートしたのですが、向こうの方（ジャック）が、気を使っていろんな質問をしてくれたので、それに応えるという形でした。少しづつ英語に馴染み、ジャックとも仲よくなり、渡米前には本当に会えるの？と、半信半疑でした。」



今回彼女が向かったのは、ロスから車で約１時間の場所。私の友人ジャックの家にステイしながら、カリフォルニア大学リバーサイド校の、３か月弱の短期語学留学であるエクステンション・プログラムを選択してもらった。ジャックの家から大学までは車で１５分。これはなかなかのロケーションだ。

彼女の今回の負担分は、往復の旅費だけ。この費用は行く時期や行き先、航空会社の選択によって変わって来ます。ただ３か月の宿泊代と、自分で外食に行く以外の、家での食費は無料！皆さんが知りたいであろう、問題の大学の授業料は、２５万円弱でした。航空運賃などの交通費だけがＹさんの負担。それ以外は、ランドマーク・ポストと私の友人ジャックが負担しました。ランドマーク・ポスト・クラブが定員１００人を達成すれば、今回のようなことを、毎年数名の会員に実施出来る目途がつきました。語学留学ではなく、アメリカ家庭へのホームステイであれば、その３倍の人数に、そういう機会をプレゼント出来る。本当の英語に、会員の皆さんに触れて頂けます。

エクステンションについて説明しておきましょう。アメリカは、移民の国といわれるほど様々な国の人が暮らしています。また、教育に関して世界的な評価を得ている国です。そのような背景から、アメリカの多くの大学で、エクステンションといわれる生涯教育部門の学部が存在します。これが、エクステンションです。多くのアメリカ人や、留学生がエクステンションで学んでいます。アメリカの社会人の方、また、短期で学びたい学生、社会人の留学生が多く在籍しています。







「私のクラスは１５人。日本人は私だけでした。他の人たちはトルコ、ロシア、韓国、台湾、タイなどの国の人でした。１日の授業は５０分の授業が５時間ありました。ランドマーク・ポストの田村社長さんが、私の英語力をチェックしてくれて、下から４つ目くらいの、fighter-Kさん曰く「簡単なビギナーコース」に通うことになりました。もらった教科書は勿論全て英語しか載っていません。多少どころか大学に着いたら不安でした。でも授業が始まったら、意外なことに？ついて行くことが出来ました。他の生徒たちも英語の出来ない人たちが、みんな頑張っているという感じだったです。」

彼女は毎日朝７時に起床。８：３０にジャックの奥さんが車で１５分の大学まで送ってくれます。授業が終わる３：００過ぎに、彼女は電話して迎えに来てもらう。楽しい放課後どころか、生まれて初めての１日中英語の生活で、クタクタだったそうです。家に帰れば宿題に１時間。予習にも１時間は最低かかったそうで、遊んでばかりいられる日本の大学時代とは違ったと。（笑）



「このステイの家には、もう１人、ブラジル人女性もステイに来ていたのですが、全く話す時間というか、余裕が無かったです。結局、私がジャックさんの家に着いてから、彼女は３日くらいで帰国してしまって、住所も何も聞けませんでした」。

彼女が勿論３か月で英語が上達するなんて、思っていません。どれだけアメリカに馴染み、楽しく過ごすことが出来るか。ホームシックにならないか。文化の違いを体感出来るか。英語が出来ればどれだけ楽しいか・・・そういうことを分かってくれればいいと思っていました。今後会員の方々に行ってもらうのも、そういう狙いでアメリカに行って欲しいと思っています。勿論、もっと上のクラスや、違う目的で行くのも自由です。



「大学についても驚きました。日本の大学と全然違う。いろんな年齢の人たちがいるし、その地域全体がキャンパスという感じでした。日本の大学と違い、本当に環境が素晴らしかったです。」

１番日本と違うと彼女が感じたのは、どういう点だったのか、非常に興味深いので聞いてみました。やっぱりと思いましたね。

「授業では本当によく、チームで話しあったりするんです。その時に私が年長だったせいか、チームＹなんて私の名前が使われたり・・・男性にはとても親切にされました。レディファースト？あれが本場のレディファーストというものを経験しました。ドアを開けたり、いろいろなことで。日本ではありえないですね。（笑）向こうにも日本人男性は結構いたんですよ。でも、大学では彼らのいい評判は聞きませんでした。いつも何人かで行動を共にしていました。その人たちは、外国人の男性が女性にドアを開けているのに、そこを当たり前のように出て行くんですよ。あれには驚きです。エレベーターでも我先に出て行くし。全く国際感覚がゼロですね。その場の空気が読めないのではなく、頭が悪いのかと思いました。他のアジアの国の男性でも、レディファーストを心がけて行くのに、日本人だけはしないんです。ちょっと恥ずかしかったです。同じ日本人として。私は田村さんから、日本人とは行動を共にせず、日本人をもし見たら観察しろと厳命されていましたので。」

とにかく日本人男性が、いつも日本人同士でつるんでいる。そして、環境を無視してレディファーストも何もしない。だから他の国の人達とも行動を共にしていなかったのが印象的だったそうです。そういう連中は何を学びに、アメリカまで行っているのでしょうか。若い男性でさえ、こうして国際感覚を身につけることが出来ない。情けない話です。真面目な話、笑えませんね。



「大学では楽しく過ごせました。授業にもついていけました。簡単なクラスだったからですけど。でも困ったのが週末でした。アメリカ人は凄くパーティが好きなんですよね。土曜・日曜は常にパーティ！（笑）ホストファミリーのジャックさんの家にお客様が来る。そうでなければ、私たちがジャックさんの友人を訪ねるんです。でも、話しかけられても駄目。英語が分かりません。２～３回頑張って聞くのですが、分からないのであきらめたりして寂しかったです。そしてジャックさんの家での２回目のパーティの時に、私は重要なことを思い出したんです」。

「ランドマーク・ポストの田村社長さんが、“もしアメリカで寂しい思いをしたら、これを開けなさい”と、言われて持たせてくれたものがあったんです。それを思い出して開けてみると、箱と思っていたのは何とスキヤキ用のお鍋。そしてその中にいろんなものが入っていたんです。手紙が入っていて、「困ったちゃんへ」と書いていました。（笑）今日のパーティでは私が食事を作りますといい、スキヤキだと言えと。（笑）英文と日本語の両方で書いてくれていました。ジャックの奥様と買い出しに行き、スキヤキです。そして“このビデオテープをパーティが始まって、話が続かなくなったら再生せよ”と、ビデオテープも入っていました。

再生すると田村さんの姿が出て来て、話し始めたんですけど、私には英語なので分かりません。時々私の名前が出て来るので、私の事を言っているのは分かるのですが・・。みんなが私の方を見て、いろいろ言いだした時、田村さんが日本語で、“さあＹさん、得意のカードマジックを、みんなに見せてあげようか。ジャックが今、カードを持ってくるから”と。後は私がパーティの主役になりました。そうか、こうやって自分をプロモートしないと駄目なんだと学ばせて頂きました。他にも私がハーモニカが上手いなんて言うので、よく演奏しました。（照れ）



箱（お鍋）の中には他にも折り紙があり、彼らは折り紙を知らないからとか・・いろいろ書いてくれていました。それを夜リビングでみんなで一緒に作ったりして、すごく楽しかったです。この家にいたオス猫の“パルゾ”が私にすごくなついてくれたのも、家族になったような気がして嬉しかったです。書道の道具も一式あって、これも喜ばれました。田村さんが作ってくれていたカンニングペーパーもあり、とても助かりました。RIVERは川と書く。どうして川という形なのか、山はどうしてこういう文字の形になったのか・・・小学校で習ったようなことを説明をしながら書けと、英文でも書いてくれていたのです。そうすると関心を持って見てくれて、あとは皆さんのリクエストに応じていろんな文字を書きました。「愛」「心」とか。とても喜ばれました。次の週末からはいつもいろんな英語を毛筆で書かされました。（笑）

帰国する時は、もう涙、涙でした。こんなにもメールから片言の英語で知り合った人と、仲良くなれるんだと。宣伝みたいですが、こんなシステム他にはありません。ブログを読み始めた頃は、田村さんって、キツイ人だと思っていたんですが、こんなに素晴らしい、気配りの出来る男性を私は他には知りません。可笑しかったのは、ミスター・タムラは日本人の姿をしたアメリカ人だからと、みんなが言うのです。特にジャックさんは会社の取締役だと思うのですが、ミスター・タムラからビジネスを習ったなんて言うから驚きです。根回しなんて言葉まで知っているんです。（笑）

本当にアッという間の３か月でしたが、楽しかった半面、語学は短期間でマジックのようにマスター出来るものではないと分かり、これからもメールやチャットでジャックさんのご家族とお付き合いを続けて行きます。でも、本当に素晴らしい人達からは、いろんなことを短期間でも学べることを知りました。これは皆さんに伝えたいことです。お金では買えない人と人との信頼関係を学ぶことが出来るのが、ランドマーク・ポストという英会話の会社です。英会話という形をとっていますが、私には田村さん自身が目玉商品だと思えました。そして英語は勿論上達しますが、人間の幅が広がる、これまで知らなかった世界を見ることが出来、その世界へ行くことが出来るクラブだと思います。ひょんなことから会員になった私ですが、人生での素晴らしい出会いでした。

帰国前に田村さんに、そういう感謝を伝えたら、「感謝の言葉はもういいから。これから何年間もそういうことを言われる為に、これを仕事にするんだ。いいだろう？」って。子供みたいに自慢されて。（笑）それより「お土産は買ってくれたの？」と言われ、何のことですかと言うと、「こら！手紙を読んでいないのか！」と怒られました。例のお鍋に入っていた未読の手紙があったんです。お土産よろしくって。それはオスカー像。これから１人アメリカに行かせるたびに、その人が満足したら、オスカー像を１体もらって事務所に並べるそうです。私、あわててジャックさんの奥さんとハリウッドに行きました。（笑）



この時は私が車の運転をしたんです。緊張しましたが、思い出になりまいた。とても気持ちが良くて・・・。カーステレオのBGMはfighter-KさんのCDでした。奥さんまで本当に気に入っているんです。私も大好きになりました。ハリウッドは、とてもいい観光になりました。ひょっとしたら、これ田村さんのご配慮だったのかも・・・と思ったら涙が出ました。



人と人との出会い・・・本当に素晴らしいです！読んで頂いて、皆さん、ありがとうございました」。

Who is the next ? 次にアメリカに行くのは誰でしょう？私は会員の方全員に、順番にこういう体験をしてもらおうと思っています。皆さん、会員様のご紹介、よろしくお願い致しますね。ただし、本当に英語を学び、アメリカに家族ぐるみで交際出来るような友人を持ちたいと思っている人を。安く旅行出来そうなんていう人や、言うことは一人前だけど、口だけの頭でっかちの人は不要です。私は素晴らしいクラブにしたいのです。今の英語のレベルなんてどうでもいいのです。向上心、探究心、異文化への関心、人との出会い・・そういうことを大切に出来る人に、入会して欲しいと思います。今現在、高校生から58歳までの方々が会員になってくれています。年齢も関係ありません。新しい出会いと、その為に英語を学ぶ意欲を持っている人を、お待ちしています。





最後にＹさんの成績表です。ＡとかＢとかの表記の部分ですが、短期間で優秀な成績です。（初心者クラスですが）やはり興味を持ってやれば、結果はついてきます。興味を持てて継続出来るのが「ランドマーク・ポスト・クラブ」なのです！お読み頂き、ありがとうございました！

アメリカ人、ローラのボランティアをご紹介

私の今や妹であるローラからメールが来ました。 そうエッカート博士の娘さんです。彼女はキリス教について教会で講義を持ったり、昔は幼稚園を経営したこともあります。敬けんなクリスチャンです。 その彼女が先週８月７日～９日まで、どんなボランティアを行って来たかを知ることは、アメリカ人のボランティアについての１面を知るのに、とてもいい機会だと思います。彼女の行き先は「刑務所」でした。 またこれはレポートではなく、私に来た彼女からのプライベートメールです。彼女の許可を得て掲載しました。これを読めば、私は彼女とはメールと国際電話で友情をはぐくんで来ましたが、今やどれだけ私たちの心が、１つになっているかをご理解頂けると思います。アメリカ人と文化の壁を越えて友人になることの、片鱗を理解して頂けたらと思います。 文化が違う、言葉が違うと言っても、大切なのは「ハート」です。宗教が違っても関係ありません。長文ですが、ぜひ読んでみて下さい。

Hi Kouji,

Well, it's Monday and I'm out on parole!!!!! (big laugh)

Now I have so much to tell you. Faith, Grace and Love - prison was an amzing experience. It was my first time, but God was with me and the prisoners said I was the best! LOL Laura is funny and they trusted me because I never tried to hide my innocence and lack of experience. Everyone was scared of "Benji". He is a member of the worldwide gang called the LATIN KINGS - also known as "The Nation." They are considered the deadliest gang in the world and are known for executing people. You can read about them on the internet. Guess who got Benji at their table for the weekend. - Yes. ME.

Before we left yesterday, Benji told the group he wanted to get up and speak in front of everyone. This really surprised everyone. Benji didn't talk with people and never wanted to share his feelings. He said that we had all changed his heart forever. He said that, Now Laura is my new stepmother. He wrote me a note in spanish. It said, "You have opened my mind and my heart. I am no longer afraid." - You know me Kouji, usually Laura does not cry. My eyes filled with tears, as I broke the rules and leaned over and gave this young 20 year old kid, already in prison for murder, a big warm hug. What happened next made all 35 people in the room silent. This tough kid who never showed emotion, was always "fine" and "tough" buried his head and cried his heart out. (In front of everyone, inclusing 4 other members of his gang!) MIRACLE.

Rey, another prisoner, and Benji sat at our table together. They were ASSIGNED to our table. They had no choice, We found out later in the weekend from Rey that they were each memebers in competing gangs that often fought each other - viciously. At first, they didn't know how they were going to do the Christian weekend together. They weren't allowed to even speak by gang rules. In the end, they hugged, again, in front of members from both their gangs. Rey told me he would keep an eye on Benji for me. On the way into church, Rey grabbed my arm and whispered, "You are a miracle. I can't believe what you did with Benji. No one could have done what you did."

I told Rey, this was not little Laura, this was GOD. Your God too - and he loves ALL his little children - you, me, Benji and all these people, all the gang members, in a way we cannot love each other. God uses the least of his creatures to do great things. This weekend, I witnessed a great thing. I know I was a part of it; the little part. I am HUMBLED and GREATFUL that God allowed me to love through his work!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rey smiled at me and said, "You are amazing." And again, I responded, "He is an AMAZING GOD! It's Him. Now, you take over His work. Please watch over Benji. Rey said he absolutely would do that and they will be go to the prison church together every Sunday.

I have a surprise for Benji and Rey, and John (an older prisoner that was with us too). I spent the whole weekend breaking little rules for my inmates. They were crying when I left. We were all crying. I broke the rules and went back to my table where both Rey and Benji were crying. I leaned over and whispered, "I will return soon. I will come to your church for Mass." Benji cried even harder, Rey whispered back, "They won't let you." (My partner, Mark and I had already found a way to get back into the prison to do this.) However, I want them to continue to go to church, so I didn't tell them I knew I could. I didn't want them to know what Sunday, so they would go each Sunday to look for me. (smile) I whispered back, "When have I ever let little rules stop me from doing God's work? Are you kidding me? You still don't believe? (the last line had double meaning - can you understand?) - Today, I received permmision from the leader of the Ministry Program and the Deacon who runs the church inside the prison - I can return!!!!!! YES!!!!

Now is time for my family. The next few weeks I will give to John and my children. We go to the boat and this summer has been very short because we have had so much rain. I cannot give up more family time now. This would be wrong, so I asked the Leader if I could go back in Sept or Oct. He said yes - it will keep Rey and Benji in church for weeks! LOL!!!!!!! - God is good! There were so many other things I want to tell you, but I have NO time today.

I will tell you one other thing. The inmates at my table became very protective of me. Because of the rules of the prison I was not allowed to bring in anything. I was not allowed to bring water. I was not allowed to bring any food. This was a real problem for me, as I have that disease, which I think you know about. I can eat no preservatives, I can only eat pears and blueberries, no other friut. I can't eat things with sauces unless I make them - no vinegar, no tomaoes, etc, etc. It is very diffcult for me to eat OUTSIDE a prison, it was impossible for me to eat IN one.

The prison served us the same food they fed the prisoners. It was very bad. I never care about good or bad food. I always ate everything. However, because of my disease I could eat NO food. The only thing I could eat was bread and one time, some green beans. There was another problem. The prison only serves milk and orange juice. I could drink the milk, but 13 hours with only milk is very hard. After the first day I realized this was a big problem. In the re-cycled air, with nothing but milk, I was starting to dehydrate. I told the Deacon who runs the prison ministry I needed help. He told me it was difficult, but he would try. (Difficult to get drinking water - this is crazy.) By this time, my inmates had become very protective of me. Two of them went to the Deacon and told him that he needed to get me water. They said that Laura has given up enough. No food. No boat with her family. No sunny days for 3 days, Now WATER! - Finally, the Deacon argued with the guards and got me water! LOL

The next day, Rey came to me with a green apple. He told me they were very good and that they did not often get good fresh fruit in prison. Fresh fruit was unusual for them. He said he was very happy to get this apple and he couldn't wait to eat it. But then, he said, "I thought of you. I thought, if Laura can eat this apple, then at least she could have one good thing to eat tomorrow. One good thing to eat in 13 hours, other than a piece of bread. So, as much as Rey wanted to eat that apple, he saved it and brought it to me the next day. Of course, I told him that it was his lucky day! LOL I cannot eat apples, only pears and blueberries. He was happy to eat the apple, but he said he was sad because I cannot eat all day and night long. He would have been happier to watch me eat the apple.

You know, Kouji, how often do we get treated with so much thoughtfulness OUTSIDE of prison? How often do people make sacrifices for others out here in the world? I just looked at him and smiled and shook my head and said thank you. I told him that I was amazed at the kindness I was shown by him; a prisoner, inside a prison. He responded that he felt badly that I had to make so many sacrifices to do the 3 day ministry weekend for them. He said I had to make even more sacrifices than the others.

BUT, let me tell you something, Kouji. It's Monday and I WANT TO GO BACK TO PRISON. All the sacrifices were nothing - absolutely NOTHING compared to the experience of Christ's love that whole weekend. I will do it again, and I can't wait!!!!!

I started this email this morning. I wrote a little throughout the day. It is now 7:30 pm and John (Laura's husband) and I can finally leave work. It was a very hard day. After prison I was very emotionally drained and my body was very exhausted. I had to write letters to my inmates every night. I stayed up until 1 in the morning and I had to get up at 5:30 each morning to go back to prison each day. Of course, everyone knows I had very little to eat the whole time, and.... Laugh I am already little.

Please read this to your wife Y****. I needed to spend this time writing to you. I had so much in my heart I wanted to tell the two of you. You are my spiritual brother and sister. You are my brother and sister in Christ. My heart screamed to share my story with the two of you.

Y****'s words stayed with me all weekend. So many people told me I was stupid to do prison spiritual work. They said that prisoners do not deserve it. - Who says so? Jesus TOLD US to visit those in prison. The world instructs us in bad things. God instructs us in the good. Of course, I never listen to the world - laugh, but Y**** said I was full of grace for going to prison.

I thought of Y****, and her words as I walked through the big prison doors that first morning ( a little scared). I thought of Y****'s words while I was with my prisoners. I told my prisoners about you and Y****. I told them that they had a beautiful little Japanese woman praying for them IN JAPAN! The LOVED THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - smile. Japan is very exotic to them. They were so surprised. Later, I told my team players Y****'s words. I did not tell them WHY, but my team trusts me, and I told them that Y**** was very close to Jesus. Y****, Y****, Y**** - my sister, you were in my heart all weekend, you went to prison with me. Your name was present to me every second of each day. You gave me strength when the world told me that what I was doing was stupid. They were only a few words, but I am so thankful that Kouji remembered to tell them to me. Thank you, my sister. I love you. - Y**** - please pray for little Benji, for Rey and for John when you pray for me. They live in a dangerous world in prison. We need to pray for their safety and their hearts! Please pray for them to continue to follow the way of Jesus.

情報誌“Well”がランドマーク・ポストを紹介！

８月１０日発行の、“輝く女性を応援する情報マガジン”「Ｗｅｌｌ」に、「ランドマーク・ポスト」が巻頭のWell Newsで紹介されました。同誌には他社の英会話スクールも広告宣伝枠で載っていますが、広告ではなく、ニュース紹介です。雑誌の表紙はEvery Little Thingの ボーカリスト持田香織さんです。この紹介ニュースで、「ランドマーク・ポスト・クラブ」が、１人でも多くの人に知ってもらえたら嬉しいですね。

発行部数１６万部。配布方法の内訳は、街頭配布６万部。企業配布２万部、設置店１万部、コンビニ設置（ampm）１万部、駅ラック６万部です。駅ラックで私が知っているのは、大江戸線新宿駅改札そばです。同時にインターネットでも掲載されます。ぜひポイと捨てずに、誰かに宣伝して下さいね！よろしくお願い致します。
